Let us take a closer look at HP TouchSmart 610 all-in-one PC. Its 23.0 x 17.7 x 4.1-inch casing is industrially solid, and thicker than the 27″ iMac, though its profile is quite sleek, with its discreet speaker grille tucked away at the bottom of the bezel. The sides of HP TouchSmart 610 are gunmetal gray, albeit plastic, while the pedestal and hinge-joint are a chic jetblack. The bezel and front surfaces are matte and so stay fingerprint-free; all in all the design is quite suave.
Partly to blame for the 610′s chunkiness is the large hinge mechanism, which allows it to tilt so that the display lies almost face-up at 60 degrees from horizontal, or as HP terms it, ‘Recline Mode’. This enables the HP TouchSmart 610 to be manipulated with a passing tap, so busy types won’t have to carefully orient themselves to access the latest media content. And the hinge does seem sufficiently robust to survive rough-and-ready usage, without any worrying creaking or heart-stopping clicking.
There is no shortage of ports HP TouchSmart 610 PC. One side boasts a large volume dial, a mute button, 6-in-1 memory card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, not to mention headphone and mic jacks. On the other side we find a Blu-Ray drive and a power button. A snap-close drop-down latch door hides two more USB 2.0 ports, dual USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI-in socket, an Ethernet jack, a PCIe slot, and two Minicard sockets. In keeping with the 610 rugged housing, this flap can be shut even with a cable plugged in. The back of the chassis even provides a wheel for adjusting the camera’s angle.
HP envisages the TouchSmart 610 as a portable storehouse for digital content, rather than, say, a work machine, and that perhaps explains the somewhat rudimentary keyboard, with its flat keys and flattish panel, which aren’t geared towards long periods of typing. Repetitive strain injury, anyone? The bundled mouse though is excellent – a good size, ergonomically contoured (quite unlike the keyboard) complete with clickable scroll wheel. It seems to work on most surfaces too, from carpets to concrete.
